If feels like just yesterday that we were gearing up for the much-anticipated 2021 event. Fast-forward a few months on and I am reminded that there are less than 3 weeks, 21 days, 504 hours left before teams set off to conquer the 2022 Absa Cape Epic.

Over the past 17 years the Absa Cape Epic has earned its rightful place as one of the most exhilarating and life-changing MTB races in the world and even with the ongoing pandemic, the race has continued to stand firm in delivering an epic experience at every touchpoint.

The race is not only a testament to each teams’ physical gallantry but tests the tenacity and sheer willpower to put the body’s aches and pain aside, dig deep and do whatever it takes to cross the finish line each day over the 8 days. This year will be no different for teams who have their sights set on the end prize. It is a race that sees extremes in both terrain and temperature, grueling and unforgiving. It is here that partnerships will be tested and ultimately will showcase the importance of working together, relying on each other’s strength and experience to get teams to the gantry on the final day of the race.

At Absa, we understand the value of partnerships, and the Absa Cape Epic is a true testament to this. As we approach our 15-year milestone as title sponsor of the race, we are privileged to have had a front row seat to the tremendous growth and success the race has experienced over the years. Strongly woven into the rich tapestry of the race, is a strong partnership between us as a purpose-led African bank and the Cape Epic itself. With the recent announcement of our three-year extension as title sponsor of the race, we continue to build on this longstanding partnership.

A key driving force for Absa is the growth of female participation in the event and the sport of cycling as a whole. In 2022 we will look to reignite the #SheUntamed initiative initially launched in 2020, focusing on how we as Absa provide a platform for female cyclists to clip in and bring their untamed spirit to the single tracks. In addition, the first ever female focused Epic Trippers session is set to take place this year. It is vital to the continued growth and success of the event that the race continues to evolve and grow in both inclusivity and diversity.

I would like to wish each team the best of luck for the 2022 edition. Absa looks forward to welcoming you all to the start line on the 20th March and cheering you on at the finish line on the 27th.

Stay safe.
