where to watch

2022

is spectator friendly

Spectators are once again allowed on route and can follow the race in person or via the Epic Series App and Live Broadcast.

For many riders it is not that precious last energy gel or banana at the final water point that helps get them to the finish line on a hot, gruelling Absa Cape Epic stage. It is not knowing that there are 100kms in the legs already and only 10 to go… And, all the climbing is done. No, it is the support from the on-route spectators that buoys their spirits and carries them home to the race village.

The riders missed that in 2021, but for 2022 spectators will once again be allowed to be a part of the Untamed African Mountain Bike Race. They’ll once again be able to cheer the riders on. “After a very successful 2021, we’re very happy to not only be hitting trails once again in 2022, but that we can also have spectators come and experience some of the best of what the Western Cape has to offer, says Karen Clements, Race Director of the Absa Cape Epic. “Most importantly, we’re excited that we will once again have that all-important support for the riders on The Race That Measures All.”

One thing that makes the Absa Cape Epic so special for spectators, is that the event features the best mountain bikers in the world competing alongside passionate, dedicated amateur riders. While this offers spectators the opportunity to be within greeting distance of the likes of Matt Beers, Mariske Strauss and Nino Schurter, spectators are not allowed to assist riders in any way – pros or not. Even holding a bike while a rider pumps the tyre can earn them a penalty or disqualification. The only assistance a spectator can give a rider is a good cheer.

Come on then! Riders have their first names printed on their back numbers that are pinned onto their jerseys, so there is no excuse not to bring the vibe.

Riders have their first names printed on their back numbers that are pinned onto their jerseys, so there is no excuse not to bring the vibe.

Fans will be able to bring that vibe at various spectator points throughout the race. You will be able to see the riders at the start of the race, follow them along their journey by watching from viewpoints on route or see them make the final effort to cross the finish line at the end of each stage. Exact details of each day’s spectator points will be posted on our site soon.

“We are so grateful to once again be working with some amazing landowners, who will host the spectator points,” Clements says. “Information about the wine farms and venues on (and along) the route with some great restaurants and experiences on offer for supporters can be found on our website and social media channels.”

As most of the route traverses private property it is important that spectators respect permissions that have been so kindly granted to the event and only access the route via the official spectator points, whilst always following the directions of the officials and marshals and directional signage.

We ask that all spectators adhere to the Covid protocols and regulations in place at the time of the event.

If you cannot make it to the Western Cape in late March, you can of course also experience the Untamed action of The Race That Measures All as it happens by tuning in to the Live Broadcast.

Tune in on www.cape-epic.com on Facebook, YouTube, or download the Epic Series App for access to the Live Broadcast and Live Tracking throughout the stages.
